Review: Pretty in Black by Rae Rae Hachton

“You Just scared me half to death," I said.

"You should be thrilled you're halfway there.”

Some Things are Pretty. Some Things are Black. Love is both.

[Ellie Piper]

She wanted to die. He arose from the grave. He was sent to kill her. She was trained to kill those of his kind. But fate had other plans. He searched for 119 years to find her. & There's no way in hell he's letting her go. Dead or Alive. They're fated.

[Marcus Marble]

How far would you go to be with the one you love? Would you die for her? Would you kill for her? What if the only reason you're still alive is because of her? What if the reason you came back from the dead, was to be with her? But what if your job was to kill her, but you fell in love instead? And now you're being hunted by your own kind?

Destroy? Or be Destroyed?
Where to buy: Pretty in Black by Rae Hachton

My review:

I finished Pretty in Black a while ago and it was a surprisingly fast reading. I was so into this book that I’ve read it just a couple of hours and I found it unique. Pretty in Black is dark and mostly revolves around death. As a matter of fact the story itself starts with the near death of the main character, Ellie, which tries to commit suicide, but is resurrected by Marcus.
First the writing style was so different, as the entire book is, but the writing was different and alluring and at times poetic. While reading Pretty in Black I couldn’t help by imagining this dark world, Ellie’s world. I am pretty sure that there were sunny days, but I couldn’t help but to place it in a gothic environment, foggy and dangerous because those were Ellie’s feelings. I would be interested in re-reading the book mostly because some of the descriptions were so realistic, especially Marcus’ place.
The love story. I don’t want to see this as an instant love thing, because it wasn’t. Marcus knew Ellie before they met and after that there certainly was an evolution in their relationship. I loved how Marcus was devoted and protective, a little bit violent, but I guess that is was in his nature. Oh in case you didn’t realize it by know, Marcus was not human, he was an Evermore, pretty much dead for a while.
Ellie, an ex-cheerleader was now the opposite of what she was because of certain events in her life: her sister was dead and she partially blamed herself, her father left home and her mother was not the loving woman she once was while they were living in a trailer park. I pretty much understand where the depression she felt was coming from, therefore she felt more comfortable in dark places like cemeteries then around people. In fact she met Marcus in a cemetery and this is the first story I’ve read in which the main characters start their love story in such an environment.
Marcus was pretty much of a mystery for me as he was for Ellie. The entire book I needed to know more about his background and THANK YOU, RAE we got it. The last part of the book was entirely of Marcus’ POV and I loved to be in his head and memories. We got to see a little more of his history, a part of his life as a human and I enjoyed the magical world of this book.
I would love to know more, I still have questions about so many things. I want to know what happened to Ellie after she received her happy ending without Marcus.

Teaser Time! Frankie's Monster EXCLUSIVE Excerpt!

I have a HUGE surprise for you today! I've convinced Rae to give me the very first Tease of Frankie's Monster! Yay! I can't wait to read this book!

This teaser is uncorrected, so there may be differences in the final copy.
“I want to kiss you.” His eyes pierced into mine. He wore three black sweaters, but even in all those layers of clothes, the ice from him radiated. I clutched at the fabric, pulling him closer to me, my hand around his neck.
He leaned in, his incredibly blue lips just inches from mine now.
I rose to the tips of my toes in anticipation, reaching myself higher to meet his height. He interlaced the fingers of his icy hand with mine. He wrapped his other arm around me, and gently leaned me back, causing my pulse to quicken and my breath to waver. “Imagine being frozen like this, my lips only inches from yours, but never touching. Wouldn't it be tragic?”
He had confused me. I didn't understand, so I didn't say anything. He leaned me forward again, dropped my hand. “I can't kiss you, Frankie. Not this way.”
“Why?” I asked him. “What did I do wrong?”
“You have an admirer, already.”
“You saw me?”
“Mhm,” he said. “You didn't enjoy it. Not for a second.” His glimmering eyes caught mine. I remember stalking through the house with Nick, and what a sight that must've been. I didn't want Nick touching me at all. I didn't want him kissing me. The fact that Johnny could tell...
“But I will kiss you. You and I have some sort of future together, I ought to think.” I saw a ghost of a smile. “But I'm not a guy of ordinary kisses, you should know. When I kiss you, it will be the kiss, not just a kiss.”

Frankie's Monster Book Trailer!

A "xombie" spends his time quietly alone in the attic, longing to feel alive again.
It's only after he meets Francesca that his music box heart begins to beat. He saves
her from the gang that tries to hurt her, but not long after, he falls for her. Strangely,
she has an attraction for this anthropomorphic boy with the clock-work heart, too.
But she knows their love won't be forever, the way Johnny has intended for it to.
She's human, and well...he's not. He gives her his heart.
And she breaks it. She breaks him.
And now he wants it back. He wants her heart.

Not a typical Zombie read. Mature YA.
Dark Fantasy. Romantic-Horror.
Dark Fairy-tale.

Teaser Time! Mad Rush Scene from Raven in the Grave

Mad Rush Scene from  Raven in the Grave
The Tomb—Mad Rush
A week or so had passed before I'd gotten another chance to spend quality time with Eleanor. I had only been able to pick her up from school and take her home, having to leave right after. It was now February 18th—Coldest night on Earth. Snow covered ground. I wanted to just lay in the frost, and die for a while there. What was left to fight for wasn't the question. The question was—how was I to fight this? Ellie and I could be ripped apart. And tonight, this was all I could think of. We were supposed to get married, make love, be together for all of Eternity.
There would be no Eternity. Only Death. Either I would be forced to kill the one I love, or allow Zarfe to condemn me. I was already set on which. My damnation would be worth the price, of saving my beloved. But how was I to save her, even if I refused to kill her, and be condemned? I'm sure, that after Zarfe cast me into eternal hellfire, he would then go after Ellie.
Destroy? Or be destroyed?
Before I let that happen, I would take down everyone in Nevermore, myself included. There wasn't a second thought about it.
I was determined to destroy the hunters, destroy Nevermore, and then destroy myself, if I had to. One thing was for certain—no matter what, I wouldn't leave Eleanor again, or give up on her, or us being together.
I passed Lovers Cemetery. The green Hill, and the tree, where Ellie and I had sat together for the first time, was now covered in white. Lovers.
We may never get a chance to be lovers. I couldn't shake the thought from my mind.
The snow was so cold, it almost numbed me. Thought I'd be used to it now, an evermore, a creature of the night, alone in the quiet, the dark, the snow. I would never be used to this, not since I’d found what I'd lacked. I wouldn't let them tear her away from me. I would tear myself apart, and take them down with me first. But not before I spent every moment I could with Ellie. These would be the last few times we would ever have together.
I walked for miles, all the way to Ellie's house, and stood gazing at her bedroom window. Inside, she was warm, asleep, and dreaming.
Down here, I was aching for her. Unable to shake it away, I transported myself into her bedroom, stood at the foot of her bed. Her chest rose and fell, rose and fell. I removed my coat and my shoes, left them at the foot of the bed, as I crawled across, hovering atop her. My hair fell down in my face, blocking my view of anything but her lips, and her beating pulse. I steadied myself by making fists, and pressing them into the mattress on either side of her. Then, I lowered my lips, closer to hers. I could smell her, I could taste her in my mouth, already. Exhaling a trembling breath, I crushed my lips against hers, kissing her with a burning fire. Without even opening her eyes, her lips moved beneath mine, kissing me back. I shut my lids, imagining us, doing other things. Going further than this. I pressed my fists deeper into the mattress. My hands must've been white now, all blood drained from them as they held me in place, as I tried to restrain myself. She moaned against my lips, her hands tangled in my hair, and she pulled me down, closer to her, our bodies pressing together. At the first touch of our flesh, I groaned. Her eyes opened, as did mine, as I drew back to look at her. I couldn't hold myself together any longer. I leaned back down and kissed her, more passionately. Her hips arched against mine. I almost passed out. But when her hands slid under my shirt, her warm fingers grazing over my chest, my hands shot from the mattress, to the headboard, and I held onto it, tightly. My lips moved from hers, to her neck. I brought her skin into my mouth, sucking and biting, unable to stop. She cried out, in pleasure, making me bite harder. Her hips moved beneath me, grinding against mine.
My hands let go of the headboard, wrapping around Ellie, instead. I pulled her forward, sitting her against me, in my lap. Her legs wrapped around my waist. My eyes searched hers. “I want you.”

Review: Pretty in Black

Goodreads: A troubled, suicidal teen meets a mysterious guy in a cemetery and later discovers he has an unquenchable desire for her love...and her life

Ellie Piper's life is turned upside down after her sister's unexpected murder and her parents divorce. After her mom succumbs to moving in to a trailer park and marrying a man half her age, Ellie begins cutting herself, quits cheerleading and begins hanging out in cemeteries, dreaming of her perfect death. But when Marcus Marble shows up and sets her heart afire, she discovers a whole new world full of love and mystery. And in this world, Marcus has returned from the dead, just for Ellie, and has a desire to take her with him, into eternity. Now that he's found her, there's no way he's letting her go. Dead or Alive. They're fated.
My Thoughts: Pretty in Black got me hooked from the very moment I saw the cover and now, after finishing it in a single day, I can add that, in my opinion, the cover reflects the main character’s personality. That’s exactly how I picture Ellie’s life at the beginning.
Getting to know Ellie was hard: such a troubled soul with a horrible past. Her sister was murdered a year ago in their house. Nobody knew by whom or why and this somehow made the situation worse. Then her parents divorced soon after: her father left town for work and her mother married Nick, a violent man with half her age. Just like that, Ellie went from having a nice, loving home, to living in a trailer park with an alcoholic mother and an abusing stepfather.
We meet Ellie in a cemetery – a place where she spends a lot of time imagining her perfect death – on the verge of suicide. …And then ..he’s there.
“I thought he was the death angel here to collect me. He was too gorgeous to be human. He had long black hair, brooding eyes, and the richest ruby lips I’d ever seen.”
Having many secrets of his own, Marcus returned from the dead to save her. He’s also determined to “unbury her heart” and make her love him the way he loves her. But in order to be together forever….he has to kill her first…sort of.
One of the many things I love about Marcus is the way he’s expressing his feelings. He’s unlike any other male hero I’ve read about…I’m sure you’ve read a lot of young adult books in which “he” meets “her”, they try to stay away from (and maybe hate) each other, then finally - after 150 pages - realize they are soul-mates. Well…Marcus puts all his feelings out there from the beginning, and they only grow stronger as the story develops. Ellie is the one who’s a little bit astonished in the beginning, maybe a little skeptic.
”What are we?”

He looked at me with passion in his eyes. “Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m in love.” His face was serious, but his eyes smiled.
My breath caught.
[…]I wanted to tell him I loved him, too, but it was lodged in my throat and wouldn’t come out in words. He smirked. “You’re not required to say anything, you know. But, if you feel the same, then just take my hand.” He turned his right palm up, and placed it near my left one. One heart beat. Two heart beats. Three heart beats.
[…]When he went to move his hand away, I stopped him by taking it into mine and entwining my fingers with his.”

Ellie discovers in Marcus a savior, a soul-mate, a person worth dying for. She’ll be ready to sacrifice everything to be together. Their love story made me cry sometimes, that’s how amazing it is! The book is written from Ellie’s Point of view, but we get some of Mark’s too.
Pretty in Black is such a fast paced, amazing story that you won’t put it down from the beginning to the end. The only thing I wish for right now is a sequel.
Happy Reading!
